A Greener Future for Our Venue
At The Civic we understand that, as a community venue, our operations can have a significant impact on the environment.
Recognising the urgency of the climate crisis, we’ve taken proactive steps to reduce our environmental footprint.
Energy Efficiency and Conservation
- LED Lighting: We’ve continued to switch to energy-efficient LED lighting throughout our front-of-house areas, significantly reducing our electricity consumption.
- Motion-Activated Lighting: we use motion-activated lights in parts of the venue, ensuring lights are only on when needed.
- Efficient Water Heating: We’ve installed more efficient water heating systems to minimise energy usage.
- Improved Water Management: We’ve implemented measures to reduce water waste and improve our overall water management practices.
- Maximising Venue Usage: The energy costs associated with opening our venue, even for limited office use, can add up. By optimising our operations and usage, we can significantly reduce our energy consumption.
.
Reducing Single-Use Plastics
- Phasing Out Single-Use Plastics: We’re committed to eliminating single-use plastics from our operations.
- Replacing Plastic Items: We’ve replaced plastic straws with paper ones, switched to glass bottles of water, and are exploring further reductions in plastic usage. All external packaging is recycled where possible.
- Durable and Recyclable Materials: Our plastic pint glasses are designed to be refillable and recyclable, reducing waste. We’ve also experimented with plant-based and biodegradable alternatives.

Supporting Local Suppliers
Programming for Sustainability
- Sustainable Programming: We’re exploring ways to incorporate sustainability into our programming, from choosing environmentally conscious artists to promoting climate-friendly initiatives.
- Supporting Sustainable Practices: We’re committed to working with companies and artists who share our commitment to sustainability.
.
Encouraging Sustainable Transportation
- Promoting Sustainable Travel: We would love to encourage more sustainable forms of arriving at the venue but we know local bus services can present a challenge, and its something we cannot control, However……
- Celebrating Sustainable Efforts: we’ve noticed that many of our visitors are already taking steps toward sustainable travel.
In fact, over 15% of visitors in the past two years walked to the venue, and another 17% have shared their journeys with friends and family.

For Us and For You
We will be investigating recommendations from the Theatre Green Book and Julie’s Bicycle and seeing how we can implement them at The Civic as we continuously explore new ways to reduce our environmental impact and create a greener future for our venue and for our community.
